Broncos Release QB Brian Griese Denver, March 15th, 2010: Veteran quarterback Brian Griese was given his unconditional release from the Denver Broncos today. Griese was the Broncos leading passer last season, completing 65% of his passes and throwing eight touchdown passes, but was undone by his 16 interceptions in only 220 attempts. His 16 picks were the third most in the league in 2009, behind only Brett Favre and David Garrard. In 2008, Griese was much better, throwing 25 TDs and only 12 picks. Ironically, the Broncos acquired Griese from Jacksonville prior to the 2008 season in partial exchange for Favre. It was clear, however, that the 33-year-old Griese was on the decline last year, and his release most likely clears a roster spot for a younger developmental quarterback. With the release of Griese, the Broncos have only Daunte Culpepper and Rex Grossman on their roster, neither of whom is seen as starting material at this point in their respective careers. Although Culpepper had success in the ISFL in the past, he is now viewed by the current staff as past his prime, and Grossman is viewed as a once-promising quarterback who is now just a journeyman.
